Dead Mountaineer’s Hotel (Grigori Kromanov, 1979) 1hr 33m | 40th anniversary screening
01/09 14:30 @ CCA Glasgow
Dead Mountaineer's Hotel ("Hukkunud Alpinisti" hotell) is a Soviet-era Estonian sci-fi murder-mystery whodunit in the exact sense you’d expect. Cold, mysterious, robust, stylish. A hard-marbled tableau of Noir and Industrial near-Bauhaus aesthetic set in the powder-white isolation of the snowy alps.
A contemplative and weird discussion on death and aliens, masking a more abstract critique of Gender, Identity, Soviet Communism and Humans in the face of the unknown. More ahead of its time than it's ever given credit for and more powerfully atmospheric than the vistas surrounding it, Dead Mountaineer's Hotel is truly a thawed-out gem, begging to be displayed.
